All of us here at Glycal Forte would like to introduce Connor Smith, who has recently joined the team as our Ruminant Technical Support Manager.
Connor has extensive knowledge of the dairy industry having worked in the industry for over 11 years now, more recently as a Dairy Herd Manager. His career in dairy began when he was 13 years old, on a local family dairy farm in Biddulph, North Staffordshire. He was involved in all aspects of the day to day running of the farm including milking and managing the general husbandry of the cows – He has had a great passion for dairy cows ever since!
At 16, Connor joined Reaseheath College where he first completed an Agricultural Diploma during which he gained secondary qualifications such as cattle foot trimming, artificial insemination of cattle and safe transport of livestock, to name just a few. This was followed by a Bachelor of Science degree in both Dairy Herd Management and Agricultural Business Management. During this time, he delivered talks on selective dry cow therapy. In Addition, Connor has travelled to Canada to learn about how dairy farmers outside of the UK run their farming systems and manage the health and productivity of their cattle. Working with cows alongside a degree, allowed Connor to really apply his knowledge learnt during his academic studies. Connor found seeing the results first hand was great as it gave him a real understanding of what worked on farm and what didn’t.
His BSc culminated with the achievement of the Meredydd David award for Academic and Technical Excellence awarded by University Centre, Reaseheath.
Following his BSc, Connor attended Harper Adams University where he completed a Master’s degree in Ruminant Nutrition. He was fortunate enough to be awarded the Elizabeth Creek Postgraduate Scholarship during his time at Harper Adams and the extra funding really allowed him to put time aside to focus on his studies.
Connor’s MSc thesis largely focused on ketosis and related transition disorders in dairy cows. This is something which has been crucial in understanding the true benefits that Glycal Forte® can offer to farmers. Connor has strongly recognised that helping farmers become more sustainable, and more efficient in how they manage the health and welfare of their stock. He says:
“I am really looking forward to getting to meet everyone during he time at Glycal Forte®, as well as seeing more farmers gain the benefits that the product has to offer”
Connor has hit the ground running since starting with us! Getting to know each of our clients and the challenges they face. We can’t wait to watch Connor progress and we hope he has a long future with us here at Glycal Forte®!
